Advertised Exhibition Ancient Landscape, Modern Times: Eric Ravilious and the Artists of the Chalk Downs

 Something old, something new

How did the remains of Britain’s ancient past coexist with the march of modernity? Ancient Landscape, Modern Times: Eric Ravilious and the Artists of the Chalk Downs at the Holburne Museum in Bath explores how this juxtaposition played out in the period between the 1910s and 1940s. The exhibition, curated by Arts Society Accredited Lecturer James Russell, shows how artists such as Eric Ravilious, Tirzah Garwood, John Nash and Peggy Angus drew inspiration from the storied chalklands of southern England – nowhere more clearly than in Ravilious’s The Westbury Horse (1939), pictured here. Combining the majesty of a monumental hill-carving with a train puffing its way across farmland, past and present appear unusually close. The exhibition continues until 10 January 2027.
